Information:

→ As the stage manager for the House Arts, I was in charge of creating a technical requirement form for the various acts to fill out. I had to try and get as much information about each act so that the stage crew team could setup and prepare prior to the rehearsal.

→ During the rehearsal process, I was in charge of keeping the rehearsals moving and on time. I informed each of the departments of the next act so that they could prepare for the rehearsal and be efficient with our time.

→ On the night, I had a table positioned by the side of the stage so that I could see everything that was happening on the stage. I visually cued the lighting and sound based on notes I had made during the rehearsal.

→ I also had to communicate with the sound operator over cans to tell him which mics were about to go on stage

The Tempest

Standard

Location: Reed’s School

Role: Assistant Stage Manager

Information:

→ This was my first main school production in the stage crew. During the get-in, I worked with the technical manager and director to paint the whole stage matt white. We also surrounded the hall with 8 foot flats to enclose the audience and stage in a plain white box.

→ During the show, I managed the props and helped get all of the actors into their positions on time. I was also in charge of operating the Kabuki drop. I had the job of resetting the Kabuki after each performance to get it ready for the next performance.

Main Challenges:

→ The director wanted to create the effect of rain during the opening sequence. We screwed hose-pipes with holes onto long planks of wood. We then fixed drain-pipes upside-down on top of the hose-pipes. This meant that as water was pumped into the hose, it squirted up out of the holes and hit the guttering which dispersed the water which fell like rain. The water was pumped from a water butt backstage.

→ We spent several hours cutting scaffolding poles to the exact measurements to make legs which raked the lite-deck stage. This allowed the water to flow into a container under the stage once it had fallen.

Information:

As the ASM, I set the props and instruments for the acts as per the technical requirements during the rehearsals. I managed a team of 5 stagehands who also set the stage during the performance.

This role required a lot of communication with the SM who organised the set changes over cans. I also needed to communicate with the sound operator to inform them what microphones were in use and their positions on stage.

The SM was taken to hospital half way through the week so I took over his role during the rehearsal while making notes for my ASM role. I then updated the SM with all of the rehearsal notes when he arrived back an hour before the show.
